A Parallel Graph Coloring Heuristic

چکیده
The problem of computing good graph colorings arises in many diverse applications , such as in the estimation of sparse Jacobians and in the development of eecient, parallel iterative methods for solving sparse linear systems. In this paper we present an asynchronous graph coloring heuristic well suited to distributed memory parallel computers. We present experimental results obtained on an Intel iPSC/860 which demonstrate that, for graphs arising from nite element applications , the heuristic exhibits scalable performance and generates colorings usually within three or four colors of the best-known linear time sequential heuristics. For bounded degree graphs, we show that the expected running time of the heuristic under the PRAM computation model is bounded by EO(log(n)= log log(n)). This bound is an improvement over the previously known best upper bound for the expected running time of a random heuristic for the graph coloring problem.

Parallel Jobs Scheduling with a Specific Due Date: Asemi-definite Relaxation-based Algorithm
This paper considers a different version of the parallel machines scheduling problem in which the parallel jobs simultaneously requirea pre-specifiedjob-dependent number of machines when being processed. This relaxation departs from one of the classic scheduling assumptions. While the analytical conditions can be easily statedfor some simple models, a graph model approach is required when confli...

Finding a good graph coloring quickly is often a crucial phase in the development of eecient, parallel algorithms for many scientiic and engineering applications. In this paper we consider the problem of solving the graph coloring problem itself in parallel. We present a simple and fast parallel graph coloring heuristic that is well suited for shared memory programming and yields an almost line...

Graph coloring is a way of coloring the vertices of a graph such that no two adjacent vertices have the same color. Graph coloring problem (GCP) is about finding the smallest number of colors needed to color a given graph. The smallest number of colors needed to color a graph G, is called its chromatic number. GCP is a well-known NP-hard problems and, therefore, heuristic algorithms are usually...
متن کاملA Parallel Distance-2 Graph Coloring Algorithm for Distributed Memory Computers
The distance-2 graph coloring problem aims at partitioning the vertex set of a graph into the fewest sets consisting of vertices pairwise at distance greater than two from each other. Application examples include numerical optimization and channel assignment. We present the first distributed-memory heuristic algorithm for this NP-hard problem. Parallel speedup is achieved through graph partitio...
